Why KanoonKhoji Exists

Laws affect many aspects of our lives, but finding the right legal document is not always straightforward.

Legal documents can have long official titles, different English and Nepali names, and multiple amendments. People may search for the same law using different words, abbreviations, dates, or languages.

Someone looking for the Constitution of Nepal, for example, might search for "Constitution of Nepal 2015," "Constitution 2072," "Nepal ko Sambidhan," or "नेपालको संविधान."

All of these searches refer to the same fundamental legal document.

KanoonKhoji is being developed to make this discovery process simpler by organizing legal documents and connecting them to the different terms people naturally use when searching.

We believe finding a law should not require knowing its exact official title.

What KanoonKhoji Does

KanoonKhoji is designed as a searchable library of Nepalese legal documents.

Each law has its own dedicated page, bringing together essential document information and access to its PDF.

The platform focuses on several key capabilities:

• Read and download PDFs: Access legal documents through a built-in PDF reading experience, with options to open and download them.

• Access English and Nepali versions: Move between corresponding language versions through two interconnected websites.
• Find information in one place: Browse legal documents through a consistent, organized interface rather than navigating each document independently.

KanoonKhoji begins with a PDF-focused approach, making legal documents easier to discover and access while establishing the foundation for more advanced legal information services.

One Platform, Two Languages

KanoonKhoji is designed to serve people looking for Nepalese legal information in both Nepali and English.

The platform has two interconnected websites:

• English: law.nepalwide.org
• Nepali: kanoon.nepalwide.org

Both websites share the same underlying legal document database, design, and functionality.

The difference is the language of the experience and the corresponding document version.

A user viewing a law in English can navigate to its Nepali version, and a user viewing the Nepali version can access its English counterpart when available.

Search is also designed to recognize English, Nepali, Romanized Nepali, and common variations in legal document names.

Our goal is to make language less of a barrier to discovering Nepal's legal information.

Beyond PDFs: Our Long-Term Vision

PDF access is the starting point, not the final destination.

KanoonKhoji is being developed with a broader vision of transforming legal documents into a structured, searchable, and interconnected legal information system.

In the future, we aim to make legal content available directly as readable web pages, allowing users to explore an entire law or navigate to individual sections and provisions.

Instead of searching through a lengthy PDF to locate a particular section, users will be able to access that provision through its own dedicated page.

This approach is intended to make legal information easier to read, search, navigate, reference, and share.

The original legal documents will remain important as source materials, while structured digital content will provide additional ways to explore the law.

We are building KanoonKhoji step by step, starting with reliable document discovery and PDF access before expanding into more detailed legal navigation.

It is designed to serve as a dedicated destination for discovering, accessing, and eventually navigating Nepalese legal information.

Our immediate focus is to create an organized, searchable legal PDF library with a consistent reading experience in English and Nepali.
